6 tips to help create a better attic space

One of the first things that comes to mind when you start feeling that there is limited space in your home is to upgrade your attic. If you are going to add more space to your attic, it is recommended to also ensure that you upgrade the insulation. Whatever you decide, make sure to seek the help of an attic insulation professional before you convert the attic.

Here are 6 tips on how to get the most out of your attic upgrade so that you have a more comfortable space, not only in the attic but also in your home’s living space.

1. Strengthen the floors
If you spend time in the attic, it is going to cause noise in the rooms below. You should not only ensure that the floors are strengthened, you may also have to check the joists. They should be strong and be able to bear the weight of the floor.
Also make sure that the bays are filled with densely-packed insulation.

2. Choose spray foam insulation for roof
Spray foam insulation may cost more than for fiberglass batts, but they provide more even and reliable insulation. Keep in mind that more heat is lost and gained through the roof, making it reasonable to be spending a few more bucks in better insulation.
Foam insulation has much higher r-value and better air barrier. The interesting thing is that you will not have to add as thick an insulation layer as for other materials. A few inches of spray foam will have the same r-value as a thick layer of other materials.

3. New bathroom
If you are going to add a new bathroom in the attic, make sure it is above an existing one. The advantage is that it will make it easier to connect with existing plumbing. It will also reduce the amount of wall damage for installing new pipes.

4. Create innovative storage solutions
There is not much room in the attic space. Therefore, you will have to innovate. Find storage opportunities in all the nook and corners. Install cabinets and cubbies to keep clutter to the minimum.
This will help in making the attic appear larger and clutter-free. Adding cabinets, perimeter drawers and cubbies will help save more space when they are recessed into the knee walls.
You may even find space near pipe chases and chimneys for installing open shelves.

5. Use another thermostat
Use a separate thermostat to create a different zone for the new attic space. This is going to help improve the comfort level in both the attic and the living space down under.
Your heating/cooling system may need expansion if it was not heated/cooled earlier. You will have to consult a pro to ensure that an attic insulation upgrade will not require upgrading this system as well.

Why a separate zone?

Attic rooms are unlike your home’s living space. They will be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Therefore, for best results it is recommended to have a different heating/cooling system itself. But that is not feasible in most homes.
You should however have a separate thermostat for it!

6. Lighting
Your newly added living space will require lighting. It is recommended to add recessed lights which are ideal for a space that has lower ceiling and limited room. It will help keep the lights out of the way and everyone safer, especially the kids.

Keep these points in mind when you want to upgrade your attic, and you will be able to create a better living environment for your family.
